Bravo, Sir, both for those glasses and your bravery. Bravo.

Zachary Quinto is a cool dude. That’s a fact. (You may know him from the show Heroes or from filling Leonard Nemoy’s iconic role of Spok in 2009′s Star Trek.) Audiences have known for a while now that he is very talented, smart, funny, and well-spoken. Today though, he offered another positive adjective to describe him. Today, he came out as a proud gay man. I really have to applaud him. It’s one thing to have to do that as a ”normal” person, but to do that with all eyes on you is something really courageous. I think he did it with real class too, instead of being on the cover of People and making some corny statement about the pain he endured keeping a secret for all those years and how he’s embarking on a new journey blah blah blah. He is very intelligent and that showed in the way he handled such a landmark moment (whether he was conscious of this or not).

Here is a statement from his blog:

“when i found out that jamey rodemeyer killed himself – i felt deeply troubled.  but when i found out that jamey rodemeyer had made an it gets better video only months before taking his own life – i felt indescribable despair.  i also made an it gets better video last year – in the wake of the senseless and tragic gay teen suicides that were sweeping the nation at the time.  but in light of jamey’s death – it became clear to me in an instant that living a gay life without publicly acknowledging it – is simply not enough to make any significant contribution to the immense work that lies ahead on the road to complete equality.  our society needs to recognize the unstoppable momentum toward unequivocal civil equality for every gay lesbian bisexual and transgendered citizen of this country.  gay kids need to stop killing themselves because they are made to feel worthless by cruel and relentless bullying.  parents need to teach their children principles of respect and acceptance.  we are witnessing an enormous shift of collective consciousness throughout the world.  we are at the precipice of great transformation within our culture and government.  i believe in the power of intention to change the landscape of our society – and it is my intention to live an authentic life of compassion and integrity and action.  jamey rodemeyer’s life changed mine.  and while his death only makes me wish that i had done this sooner – i am eternally grateful to him for being the catalyst for change within me.  now i can only hope to serve as the same catalyst for even one other person in this world.  that – i believe – is all that we can ask of ourselves and of each other.”

Cut to my kitchen on fire and nothing but a burnt pot of tomato sauce to show for my efforts.

The other day, Sleepless in Seattle was on and I made Ricky watch the last half an hour of it. If you’ve ever seen it (and you better have), you know that it’s a great romance for Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks, but what about poor Bill Pullman? He plays a total putz and he loses out on love in the end. It’s really kind of sad. Fortunately for Bill and audiences everywhere however, he gets to play the hero in one of my very favorite rom-coms of all time, While You Were Sleeping. I like to watch it around Christmas time because it a) takes place at that time and b) is about love and family. It’s such a sweet and funny story with a great cast. Watch it if you get a chance. It’s really cute.

I think Seth Meyers is an extremely talented writer. He’s responsible for some of the funniest sketches on SNL, as well as the popular Weekend Update segment. I wish I could write punchy, witty things like he does. It is definitely a gift.
